BIOGRAPHY
My story begins in the picturesque seaside village of Horseshoe Bay, BC. Horseshoe Bay is best known for its Ferry Terminal and fish and chips. Horseshoe Bay is also the start point of the intensely scenic Highway 99 which winds through the Coast Mountains, all the way to Whistler and beyond. This is where I grew up. A place of great beauty on the edge of the edge of Vancouver and the departure point for endless adventures.
I somehow graduated from UBC with a degree in Psychology even though I spent most of my library time writing strange children's stories about fantastical creatures. I then took some courses in creative writing and wrote a lot of poems that seemed to have melodies. Finally I borrowed a guitar and taught myself to play so I could turn them into the songs they wanted to be. Soon after that I started performing them in front of people despite my almost paralyzing fear of doing so. The next thing I knew I was playing Lilith Fair.
I made one album of my songs called Small Fires and people seemed to like it. The reviews were good and I managed to get all the songs licensed to TV shows and it was good. Yes it was. I hosted an open mic night for a long time at a popular Vancouver bar and played and played and played until one day it seemed like it was time to play somewhere new.
I toured Canada a few times and toured in the US as well. I played at all those festivals with names like SXSW and NXNE. I even played in England. I toured with some amazing people like Jane Siberry, Damien Rice and Ray LaMontagne and even had a member of Radiohead compliment me on my performance after a show in Toronto (so I could die now I guess). Somewhere just after the part where I toured Canada and just before the part where I played in England it should be said that I was signed by Nettwerk Management.
One day I wrote a song called Fools Gold with Niko Friesen and people called it things like "a smash" and " a hit". Fools Gold ended up being played twice on Grey's Anatomy. The success and fun of this co-write thing led to more co-writes. I wrote a song with Tim Bright called "Lost and Found" which was played on Veronica Mars and they used it on the soundtrack for the show as well. I wrote with Jeff Trott (he has written a lot of hits with Sheryl Crow) and we worked together so well that we decided that he should produce my record. So Jeff produced 10 tracks and the extremely talented and nice Thom Russo produced three. These two producers pulled together an amazing group of musicians to play on the record. Members of REM, Fiona Apple's band and Beck's band all made appearances.
Nettwerk signed me to a record deal. We made Faultline and we released it digitally and then I got dropped. But it is OK. Yes it is. They have been great and I have learned so much about music and this business of music in the last few years. I recently interviewed myself and I have hired myself to be my manager. I was late for the interview but I can overlook that because I had all the right answers. It was almost like I was psychic. Perhaps it is my Psych degree. I can really read people.
Thanks to the magic of the internet Faultline has been winning over people all over the world. I even have a fan club in Brazil. Sure there are only 9 people in it, but still... Brazil!!
I am working on a new album at home that I am incredibly excited about. It will be released in the spring of 2008. I will be selling limited edition signed copies of Faultline on my fall tour which begins October 3rd in Ontario. Issa (formerly Jane Siberry) and I will be criss-crossing North America (October through December) armed with guitars, songs, jokes and costumes and we hope to see you somewhere along the way. You can see all the dates on my websites.
Last but not least, this September (2007) my cover of a Neil Young song (along with covers by a lot of artists I admire) will be released as part of Broken Tunes II. All proceeds go to charity so look out for this great collection of songs by Mr. Young.
